How I Survived the Sudden Addition of  a Little Sister

Mind you, I have nothing against well-mannered four-legged kind like me. The park is where I tend to do my socializing.  I can be particular about who I meet and greet there, and leave the less amiable fur-balls behind when I return to my peaceful den where my friendship and loyalty belong foremost to my Mistress.  So you can imagine my surprise, when the Mistress brought a stranger home who shows no immediate or future plans of leaving.  Seems she had lost her forever home somehow.  Which earned her no points in my ledger, as so did I long ago.

Fortunately,  Momma seems to have chosen someone who doesn’t question my seniority or try to usurp my authority; ” laid back” is what the humans call her personality.  I wouldn’t call myself a primadonna, but the Fido-fact remains -  I was here first,  doggone-it.  Momma  made it clear to her that I’m her No. 1 gal by always allowing me into the house, the car, and the yard first.  She feeds me first, too, and clears both of our dishes immediately so I don’t need to worry that she is scrounging my leftovers.  (Just in case, I never leave her any).   She gave me extra-plus attention when the newbie first arrived.  So after a period of probation where she seemed to get that after the Mistress, I am Top Dog around here,  and demonstrated affirmations from Momma of my own continued good fortune, I have allowed my generosity to prevail.  I’ve become accustomed to her face, as the song goes.  She is actually quite affable, and I have taught her a thing or two about providing security around here.  She seems easily influenced by my worldliness and I am even beginning to enjoy her easy-going canine company.  Additionally, she provides the Mistress with support for Puppy Paws which allows me to get some extra nap time in now and then.  I don’t even mind that Momma calls her Sweet C. because I was her Sweet P. first.  In the words of my Aunt Annie, who is one of the wisest humans I know, there’s now lots of love in this family.

She’s ain’t heavy.  She’s my sister.
